Summer Style Mistakes

Let’s get real for a moment.

If you’re over 40, you may have noticed that summer dressing doesn’t feel quite as effortless as it once did. You open your closet, scan your options, and suddenly nothing feels right. But here's the truth: most style frustration isn’t actually about clothes. It’s about alignment.

As a stylist and image coach who has worked with countless women in midlife, I’ve seen a pattern emerge. The real style struggle begins before you even open the closet door.

So today, we’re not just talking about fashion. We’re talking about the three deeper style mistakes I see time and time again—the ones that keep you feeling stuck, uninspired, and like you’ve somehow lost your shine.

1. Getting Stuck in a Style Rut

You’ve been wearing the same silhouettes, the same fabrics, maybe even the same exact pieces for years. Not because they still bring you joy, but because they’re familiar. Easy. Safe.

The problem? You’ve changed. Maybe your body has shifted. Maybe your lifestyle looks nothing like it did a decade ago. But your wardrobe hasn’t kept up. And every time you get dressed, it feels like wearing someone else’s story.

Style ruts aren’t always about laziness—they’re often rooted in uncertainty. When you’re not sure what works for you anymore, it’s easy to default to what you’ve always known.

The shift: Start small. You don’t need a total overhaul. Just permission to try something new. And that starts with curiosity.

2. Chasing Trends That Don’t Fit Your Life

Now let’s swing to the opposite end of the spectrum: trend-chasing. You know the feeling—you see something online, or in a store window, and think maybe this is the missing piece. Neon nails. Chunky shoes. A silhouette you’ve never worn before but that “everyone” is doing.

Trends can be fun, until your closet starts to feel like a costume shop.

Here’s what I’ve learned: just because something is “in” doesn’t mean it’s you. The most magnetic style isn’t trendy—it’s true to who you are.

The shift: Try things, yes. But make sure you’re choosing from a place of alignment, not anxiety. One of my favorite tricks? Rent or thrift the trend before you commit. Test the waters without overhauling your entire wardrobe.

3. Not Exploring What Actually Works for You

Most women I work with haven’t taken the time to discover what flatters them now—not ten years ago. Not before the job change. Not before the body changes. Now.

They’re still dressing for a past version of themselves, or clinging to someone else’s style rules.

The shift: Get curious. What colors make you glow? What silhouettes feel easy and elevated? What outfit made you feel like you recently? Explore those questions with intention—and without judgment.

One of the easiest ways to do this is by shopping your own closet with fresh eyes. Try on old favorites in new ways. Layer. Mix. Tuck. Belt. Then take mirror selfies and evaluate with compassion. You’re not looking for perfection. You’re looking for a spark.

Finding a treasure tucked away in your closet can be just the spark you need when heading to lunch with "the girls"!

Here’s the Truth

Style is not about size. It’s not about age. And it’s definitely not about chasing trends.

It’s about connection—to your body, your identity, your voice. Getting dressed can be a radical act of self-respect when done with intention.

So if you’re ready to begin again—not with a shopping spree, but with a mindset shift—start here:

Now Let’s Talk Practical Style Swaps

1. The Drape Trap

Oversized flowy tops might seem like the perfect disguise for your midsection—but often they just add volume and make you feel shapeless. Opt for tops with structure, especially at the shoulder, and consider tucking or belting in a way that creates shape and intention. Pro tip: take a few mirror selfies with different styling methods to find what looks best.

2. Clingy Chaos

The opposite problem—super tight, clingy fabrics—doesn’t serve you either. Your body has been through things. It deserves comfort and kindness. Look for breathable materials that glide over your curves, and layer lightly with pieces like camp shirts to stay cool while feeling confident.

3. Capri Pants (Just... No)

Capris, especially those that hit mid-calf, cut your leg at the worst spot. They aren’t doing anyone any favors. Instead, try:
• Cropped pants that end closer to the ankle
• Flowy wide-leg linen or beach pants
• Skorts or lightweight skirts for a breezy, flattering vibe

Style That Aligns With the Woman You’re Becoming

The best style isn’t about trends or rules—it’s about alignment. When you dress with intention and self-awareness, you show up differently in the world. You feel like YOU again.
